You cleaned up after your dog months ago. You used the spray, blotted it dry, maybe did it twice. By January, it seemed fine. Then April hits, the heat shuts off, the windows crack open for the first time since October, and there it is again. Stronger than you remembered.
You’re not imagining it. The smell didn’t come back. It was never gone. Winter just kept it quiet.
Why the Smell Comes Back Every Spring
In cold, dry conditions, pet urine doesn’t release much odor. Rochester winters are exactly that: forced-air heat running constantly, windows shut since October, low humidity throughout. Spring changes all of that fast.
The odor isn’t new. It’s the same accident from months ago, sitting in the padding, waiting for the right conditions to make itself known again. The more accidents in the same spot over the months and years, the more crystals are layered in. And the stronger it gets each spring.
What You Can Do Yourself First
Most Rochester homeowners have tried at least two or three products by the time they call us. Sprays, enzyme bottles, foam treatments, they work for a few days, and then the smell comes back.
For a fresh accident, a few things actually help:
- Blot immediately, don't rub. Get as much urine out as possible before it soaks into the padding. Press a clean white cloth firmly into the spot and blot. Rubbing spreads it wider.
- Cold water rinse. Pour a small amount of cold water over the spot and blot again. Repeat two or three times to dilute what's in the fiber.
- Apply an enzyme cleaner properly. Saturate the area, don't just mist it. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic to keep it wet for several hours. Enzymes need time and moisture to break down uric acid.
- Keep pets away from the treated spot. Dogs and cats can detect uric acid crystals at concentrations far below what a human nose picks up. If they return to the same area, the problem layers on top of itself.
- Check your upholstery too. Sofas, armchairs, and area rugs hold uric acid crystals the same way carpet does. If your couch smells different in April than it did in January, it's the same reactivation happening inside the foam cushioning.
For anything that’s been sitting since fall, or spots you’ve treated more than once with the smell still coming back, DIY has already done what it can.
How Pinnacle Eco Clean Handles Pet Odor Removal
Over 45 years of experience in cleaning Rochester homes as a family-owned business. Our technicians know what they’re doing, and we make sure every job shows it.
We find what you can't see:
Uric acid crystals don’t always show up as a visible stain. The first thing we do is locate every affected area, including spots you may not know exist. Treating only what you can see is exactly why most odor keeps coming back.
The approach depends on how deep it's gone:
Surface-level odor is handled differently from contamination that’s worked into the backing and padding. There’s no single fix; the severity determines the process.
Every material gets treated differently:
Carpet, upholstery, area rugs, and Oriental rugs each have different fiber types and construction. We treat based on what the material actually is, not a one-size approach.
We handle odor that's moved into the airspace:
In homes where accidents went unnoticed for a long time, odor works its way beyond the surfaces and into the structure of the room. That’s more common than most people expect.
We finish with protection:
After treatment, we recommend a protective finish on carpet and upholstery fibers so the next accident is easier to clean before it becomes a deeper problem.
The DIY gap is about depth:
Store products and rental machines work on the surface. What causes the smell in spring is in the backing, the padding, sometimes the structure itself. Getting to it needs the right equipment, the right chemistry, and knowing exactly where to treat.
